
Historic moment, will boost tourism industry: Dir Srinagar airport
The commercial night flight operation from Srinagar International Airport commenced from Sunday, officials said.
This came after the aviation regulator of India, Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Saturday gave approval to the night flight operations at the Srinagar International Airport.
Director, Airports Authority of India (AAI), Srinagar, Santosh Dhoke said that the regular night flights at the Srinagar Airport started from Sunday.
“It is a historic moment for the aviation industry and especially Jammu and Kashmir where the demand for night flight operations has been there for a long time. It will boost tourism sector as well,” he said.
Earlier this month, GoAir and IndiGo were among the airlines that operated successful test run of night flights at the Srinagar Airport.
Officials said the summer season of Kashmir valley will see a substantial increase in the number of flights with the start of night flight operations.
According to reports, the commencement of regular night flight operations from Srinagar International Airport will certainly help in the economic growth of J&K.
In August 2018, a test flight landed at Srinagar airport after sunset which illustrated that the airport was safe for night landing.
“In Srinagar’s case, an upgrade of the runway lighting system at the airport, and an extension of watch hours by the Indian Air Force, to which the airport belongs, kick-started the process,” reports said.
The Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport at Srinagar is managed by the Indian Air Force, and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) manages the civilian enclave that includes a passenger terminal building and a civil apron.
Security agencies have been raising concerns about starting the night flight operations at Srinagar airport which is located in central Kashmir’s Budgam district.
Several measures have been taken by the government to boost the tourism sector which forms the core of the economy of Kashmir.
