A policeman was critically when terrorists opened fire at him in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Friday. He later died at a hospital.
A senior police officer said Constable Riyaz Ahmad Thoker was fired upon by the terrorists near his residence in Gudroo area on Pulwama on Friday morning, said a police spokesman.
According to one report, the victim who was on leave was waiting for the school bus of his children when the attack took place.
The police officer said Thoker was injured in the attack following which he was shifted to District Hospital Pulwama where from he was referred to the Army’s 92 Base hospital in Srinagar. However, he succumbed at the facility.
The attack comes as targeted killings of security personnel, political workers, Kashmiri Pandits and migrant workers continue to take place in Kashmir at regular intervals.
In the first week of April, four non-local workers and a Kashmiri Pandit were shot in different incidents across Kashmir, suggesting that the targeted attacks against minority community members and migrant workers, were here to continue, despite major gains achieved by security forces against militancy.
The targeted killings, once again, forced many migrant workers, who have become an integral part of Kashmir economy, to flee in order to protect their lives. While the attacks had come down after security forces either gunned down or nabbed militants and their associates who were accused of involvement in these attacks, the fresh attack in Chadoora suggests that the militants still have the capability to strike at will.
