Accused was drunk, arrested: JKP
Authorities said a J&K Police head constable was killed in clashes that broke out between some on-duty police personnel inside the police lines in Kathua district of Jammu region.
According to a senior police officer, two police personnel after returning to their barracks from their duties on Wednesday evening initially entered into an argument with each other over unknown reasons.
Officials said the argument later turned into full blown clash during which the two personnel pounced on each other. It was not immediately known whether more police personnel were involved in the clash.
The two personnel are believed to have kicked and punched each other inside the district police lines. Police did not say whether more police personnel were present and why they didn’t prevent the scuffle.
In the subsequent clash, a head constable who has been identified as Muhammad Yunus was killed. He suffered a bullet injury when a constable opened fire at him.
"The accused has been arrested. Investigation is going on to find out the reasons those led to the clash," officials said.
A police statement said the accused constable identified as Iqbal Singh, who was allegedly drunk, opened fire on Younis, who received multiple bullet injuries.
Mohammad Younis was rushed to a nearby hospital but doctors declared him dead on arrival. His body was later sent for medico-legal formalities.
SSP Kathua Ramesh Kotwal said the two cops exchanged heated words over some issue, “One of them picked up his official rifle and fired several rounds, leaving the other cop dead on the spot,” he said.
Kotwal said the accused was overpowered by other police personnel and he later arrested, he said, adding an FIR has been lodged and investigating started.
The attack comes at a time when the security in Jammu and Kashmir has been heightened in view of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.
The incidences of fratricide, where a uniformed man kills his senior or subordinate, are common in Jammu and Kashmir. These have been attributed to various reasons, including the pressure of militancy, long periods of aloofness from families and others.
