
Srinagar, July 16: Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo on Wednesday reviewed Srinagar's waste management infrastructure during a visit to the Achan Integrated Waste Management Facility, stressing the need for scientific waste processing, environmental compliance and faster remediation of legacy waste.
Accompanied by Commissioner Secretary, Housing & Urban Development Department, Mandeep Kaur, SMC Commissioner Faz Lul Haseeb and senior officials, the Chief Secretary inspected key components of the city's solid waste management system, including door-to-door collection, source segregation, transportation, waste processing, biomining, leachate treatment and environmental monitoring.
Officials briefed him on ongoing capacity expansion, infrastructure modernisation and adoption of advanced technologies under Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 to improve operational efficiency.
The SMC Commissioner informed that scientific bioremediation and reclamation of legacy waste at the Achan dumpsite is underway to eliminate decades-old waste, reclaim land, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent groundwater contamination.
Appreciating the progress made, Dulloo called for sustained institutional commitment, timely infrastructure augmentation, strict adherence to environmental norms, adoption of innovative technologies and greater public participation.
He said scientific management of municipal solid waste is essential for building cleaner, healthier and more sustainable cities, reiterating the government's commitment to strengthening waste management systems and transforming Srinagar into a cleaner and greener urban centre.
