Ganderbal, Sep 18: The Internal Committee of the Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir), in collaboration with the Department of English, School of Languages, organised a one-day national workshop on “Women and Society: Revisiting Indian Knowledge Systems” at the Tulmulla campus on Friday.
The workshop brought together academicians, administrators, students and scholars to explore women’s contributions to Indian intellectual traditions, contemporary society and nation-building.
In her opening remarks, Prof. Sandhya Tiwari, Presiding Officer, Internal Committee and Dean, School of Languages, said the programme was aimed at creating meaningful learning opportunities for students and scholars while enhancing awareness about rights and contemporary social realities.
She said the workshop sought to connect contemporary concerns with India’s intellectual heritage and encourage open-minded engagement with knowledge. She also highlighted the role of women as nation-builders and the need to create conditions for their continued contribution to society.
Prof. Vandana Sharma, Professor of English and Dean, School of Languages, Central University of Jammu, spoke on women’s dignity, self-respect and purpose. Using the metaphor of a river, she emphasised perseverance, ambition and commitment to one’s goals.
She also discussed the complementary nature of masculine and feminine principles in Indian knowledge traditions and highlighted the contributions of women including Lalleshwari, Lopamudra, Gargi, Maitreyi, Akka Mahadevi, Mirabai, Savitribai Phule, Fatima Sheikh and Sarojini Naidu.
Prof. Sharma urged students to recognise their potential and move beyond limiting stereotypes, stressing the importance of gender sensitivity across society.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Geeta Singh, Professor and Director, CPDHE, Delhi University, underlined the need to rediscover women’s intellectual and cultural contributions within Indian knowledge traditions.
She connected Kashmir’s heritage with the wider Indian knowledge landscape, referring to Sharda Peeth and the legacy of Lalleshwari. She said self-awareness is central to empowerment, urging young people to recognise their abilities and contribute constructively to society.
Prof. Singh also emphasised the role of educational institutions in creating spaces for dialogue, reflection and learning.
Member IC Dr Mir Insha Farooq conducted the programme, while Dr Sunil Kumar Mannil proposed the vote of thanks.
