Ganderbal, Oct 2: The Central University of Kashmir (CUK) on Thursday commemorated the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with a one-day national seminar on “Peace and Non-Violence”, organised in collaboration with the Gandhi King Foundation–J&K Chapter at its Tulmulla campus.

The programme, held alongside Swachhata Hi Seva 2026, focused on the contemporary relevance of Gandhian values of truth, compassion, service, peace and non-violence.
Vice Chancellor Prof. A. Ravinder Nath highlighted the practical relevance of Gandhian philosophy for students, educational institutions and society. He stressed the importance of addressing grievances through peaceful means and said non-violence provides a constructive framework for resolving differences.
Linking Gandhian thought with experiential learning, environmental protection and community service, he appreciated the University's students and Safai Mitras for their contribution to maintaining clean campuses.
Prof. Nath emphasised that educational institutions have a responsibility not only to create and disseminate knowledge but also to apply it for societal benefit. He urged students and educators to draw inspiration from Gandhian ideals while responding constructively to contemporary global challenges.
In his keynote address, Prof. Prasad Gollanapalli, National President and Managing Trustee of the Gandhi King Foundation, said Gandhi's philosophy transcends time, geography and generations. Referring to the United Nations' observance of Gandhi's birth anniversary as the International Day of Non-Violence, he stressed that truth and non-violence remain central to building a culture of peace.
He said non-violence must extend beyond philosophical discourse and become part of everyday life. Citing the influence of Gandhi on global figures including Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela, he underlined the continuing relevance of Gandhian principles in addressing conflicts and social challenges.
Gandhi King Foundation–J&K Chapter Coordinator and spokesperson Mohammad Shahid Khan described Gandhi as an enduring philosophy rather than merely an individual. He urged young people to cultivate self-discipline and contribute positively to society instead of remaining confined to material pursuits.
State President of the Foundation, Dr Muhammad Ayoub Mattoo, in his welcome address, highlighted the shared legacy of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. in promoting truth, non-violent resistance and peaceful social transformation.
The event also featured felicitation of students for outstanding performance and participation in Swachhata-related activities. Winners of the Zero Waste Sports Competition for Safai Mitras were honoured, while Safai Mitras were also recognised for their contribution to maintaining cleanliness across CUK campuses.
Registrar Dr Nisar Ahmad Mir, Controller of Examinations Dr Kaiser Giri, heads and coordinators of departments, faculty members, administrative staff, scholars and students attended the programme.
Dr Firdous Ahmad Sofal conducted the proceedings, while Dean DSW Dr Jehirul Islam proposed the vote of thanks.
