CUKashmir’s SLS commemorates Constitution Day

Department of Law, School of Legal Studies (SLS), Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir), commemorated the 74th Constitution Day on 26th of November 2024 at varsity’s Tulmulla campus.

The programme (organised in offline and online mode) saw an overwhelming response from faculty members, students, and guests.

In his Presidential address, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A. Ravinder Nath, reflected on the enduring relevance of the Indian Constitution in ensuring democracy, fostering social justice, and safeguarding fundamental rights. He urged students to be sensitive to the Fundamental duties eloquently incorporated in the constitution which reflect constitutional values and ethos to be imbibed by the citizens and enjoined the participants to actively participate in nurturing constitutional values through critical thinking and civic engagement.

Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Shahid Rasool, was also present on the occasion.

In his keynote address, Vice Chancellor, Maharashtra National Law University, Aurangabad, Prof. A. Lakshminath shared his scholarly insights into the legal and philosophical underpinnings of the Indian Constitution. His address delved into the foresight of the framers of the Constitution, their understanding of societal dynamics, and their vision for a progressive India.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Dayananda Murthy C.P, Associate Professor at Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University, Visakhapatnam, highlighted the often-overlooked aspect of constitutional responsibilities, emphasizing the need for citizens to uphold and practice fundamental duties to complement their rights.

Addressing the participants, Dr. Sanjay Satyanarayan Bang, Associate Professor at Christ University, Pune, discussed the ‘The Role of the Supreme Court of India in Upholding Forest Rights and Conservation: A Constitutional Safeguard.’ Dr. Sanjay provided an in-depth analysis of landmark judgments by the Supreme Court that have fortified environmental protections and recognized the rights of forest-dependent communities.

Earlier, Head and Dean SLS, Prof. (Dr.) Farooq Ahmed Mir, emphasized the importance of the Constitution as a living document. He articulated how the Constitution continues to evolve to address contemporary challenges while retaining its foundational principles.

In his welcome address, Dr. Mangalsingh S. Bisen, Programme Coordinator and Associate Prof. SLS, highlighted the significance of Constitution Day, commemorating the adoption of the Constitution of India on November 26, 1949, and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to uphold constitutional values in education and governance.

Preamble Reading, an activity involving the Vice-Chancellor, Deans, faculty members, students, and guest speakers, both online and offline, was also done on the occasion. This collective reading resonated with the ethos of unity and commitment to justice, equality, liberty and fraternity enshrined in the Preamble.

The Constitution Day Celebration not only commemorated the adoption of the Indian Constitution but also served as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to uphold its values. Through insightful speeches, engaging discussions, and collective activities, the event ignited a renewed commitment among participants to work towards building a just, equitable, and sustainable society.
