Dense fog envelops Kashmir as cold intensifies

MeT predicts light rains, snow on higher reaches

The dense fog enveloped Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir on Sunday morning, as the mercury slipped below freezing point at most places in the valley after fresh snowfall.
There was a dense dog in Srinagar in the morning. The iconic Dal Lake was also covered with the dense fog.
“The visibility in Srinagar and some other places of Kashmir dropped below 50 metres at day break due to heavy fog,” an official said.
Motorists faced difficulties navigating due to poor visibility.
However, flight operations at Srinagar airport remained unaffected, according to an Airports Authority of India official.
Fresh snowfall caused temperatures to fall below freezing point last night at several places across the valley.
Srinagar had a low of minus 1.3°C recorded during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday against the 1.0°C the previous night.
Qazigund recorded a low of minus 1.8°C against the minus 0.4°C a day ago.
The night temperature at Pahalgam stayed below freezing point and recorded at minus 0.3°C today as against minus 1. 5°C yesterday
The minimum temperature at the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district settled at minus 2.6°C as against minus 0.5°C recorded the previous night.
Kupwara had a low of minus 0.5°C as against the 3.4°C recorded a day ago.
The Meteorological department predicted that weather will remain partly cloudy with the possibility of light rain/light Snow over the higher reaches and at the isolated places of Jammu and Kashmir.
“A weak Western disturbance (WD) is likely to hit and can cause light rain and light snow over the higher reaches and at the scattered places towards late evening of December 2 to December 3 morning. The weather will remain dry hereafter till December 7,” a MeT official said
He said dn December 8 there is a possibility of another wet spell with the possibility of light rain and light snow over the higher reaches and at the isolated places.
