Ganderbal, May 3 A temporary wooden bridge at Thajwas in the Sonamarg health resort of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has deteriorated, raising safety concerns for both tourists and local visitors.
The bridge, constructed a few years ago by the Wildlife Department to facilitate crossing over a stream in the area, is now in a dilapidated condition, making movement difficult and potentially unsafe.
With a surge in tourist arrivals to Thajwas in recent days, visitors are being forced to cross the unstable structure, leading to concerns among those associated with the tourism sector.
Stakeholders said the condition of the bridge poses a risk of accidents, especially given the increased footfall at the popular destination. They have urged authorities to take immediate steps to repair or replace the structure to ensure safe passage.
Wildlife Range Officer Mukhtar Ahmad confirmed that the issue had been flagged earlier. He said he had informed the department in writing last year about the need for repairs but no action had been taken so far.
He added that he will again take up the matter with the concerned department to push for necessary repairs.
The situation highlights concerns over maintenance of basic infrastructure at key tourist locations, particularly during peak travel periods when visitor numbers rise significantly.
