Srinagar, Jan 21: Devotees visiting the Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar have raised serious concerns over the unhygienic condition of washrooms and lavatories outside the revered site, describing them as nearly unfit for use.
Visitors reported that the facilities are poorly maintained, with dirty commodes and a strong foul odor making it difficult to remain inside even briefly. The unsanitary conditions, they said, particularly inconvenience elderly worshippers, women, and those traveling from distant areas.
Locals and devotees alleged that despite a steady flow of visitors throughout the year, basic sanitation facilities outside the shrine have been neglected. The stench from the lavatories, they said, poses public health and hygiene risks.
The devotees urged shrine authorities to ensure regular cleaning and proper maintenance of the washrooms. They called for a sustainable cleanliness mechanism, including continuous monitoring and deployment of sanitation staff, to maintain hygiene and comfort, especially during peak visiting hours, while preserving the sanctity of the shrine.
