DGAR hockey tournament begins in Manipur

Imphal, Sep 19: The Assam Rifles inaugurated the 3rd DGAR Hockey Tournament for Men and Women at Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium in Imphal East on September 18, with the competition scheduled to continue till September 28.

The opening ceremony was attended by Lt Gen K Himalaya Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd) as the chief guest. The event was also attended by Inspector General Assam Rifles (South), government officials, civil dignitaries, media representatives, social media influencers and Dr Basudev, President, Manipur Hockey.
The tournament has brought together hockey players and teams, providing them with a competitive platform to demonstrate their skills and sporting talent.
The initiative is aimed at promoting discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship and camaraderie among young athletes while encouraging greater participation in sports.
The tournament also seeks to provide emerging players with valuable competitive exposure and an opportunity to develop their skills in a structured sporting environment.
Manipur has a strong sporting tradition, particularly in hockey and other disciplines, and the event provides a platform to showcase the region’s sporting potential while encouraging young people to pursue sports.
The Assam Rifles said the tournament reflects its continued efforts to engage with youth through sports and community-oriented initiatives. Such programmes seek to promote healthy lifestyles, teamwork and constructive engagement among young people.
The 3rd DGAR Hockey Tournament will continue at Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium through September 28, with men’s and women’s teams competing for honours.
