
The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Srinagar marked World Elder Abuse Awareness Day with a series of compassionate initiatives aimed at promoting the rights and well-being of senior citizens. Held in collaboration with the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir, Department of Social Welfare, and the NGO Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Headquarters Delhi JK UT, the event took place a day ahead of the official observance to maximize participation.
Chaired by Principal District and Sessions Judge Tasleem Arif and supervised by Sub-Judge/Secretary Sajad Ur Rehman, the programme brought together legal, health, and community leaders. Speakers included Shabir Mujahid, Abdul Gani Parray, Tehsil Social Welfare Officer (South), and psychiatrist Dr. Mushtaq Maqbool, who all emphasized the need for dignity, care, and legal protections for the elderly.
A free medical camp offering general check-ups, physiotherapy, and consultations was a key highlight. Legal Aid Defense Counsels Urba Rashid and Sehar Nazir informed attendees about senior citizens’ legal rights and the NALSA Helpline 15100 for free legal support.
In addition, DLSA Para Legal Volunteers conducted a special awareness drive in Faqir Gujri to educate locals about elder abuse and available welfare services.
