Dr. Iqbal's Poetry on Dwellers of Arab Deserts

May 29, 2019 | Sheikh Arshid Ahmad

Dr. Sir Mohammad Iqbal was the great spiritual leader of whole Ummah,
He is admired as a prominent poet by Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshies, Iranians and others. Though Iqbal is known an eminent poet also he had kind love towards natural beauty and explored it through his poetry.
Nature is one of the most fascinating themes in Iqbal's poetry. A considerable number of poems devoted to natural beauty and his attitude towards nature changed him radically in certain respects under the influence of his metaphysical thought.
Iqbal described the "beauteous forms" of the outdoor world. He was trying to associate the nature with the principles of harmony, kinship and benevolence, thus reinforcing the aesthetic pleasure.
Through his poetry he explained the mode of life and dwelling place of great majority of Arabs. They were always on the move as tribes do in search of pools and pastures. They enjoyed the deserted places where no one was expected to come to their help and struggling to get every support from wilderness of desert. Dr. Iqbal mediated a serious thought over these abandoned places and tried to express the stay of Arab travellers in the camps held tightly with ropes along with their livestock. He describes the caravan that passed by and places of short stay which were sometimes specified or sometimes not.
His poetry tells about the journeys which were not measured as there were no milestones, journeys were carried on as they have no destination and it was dusty, tiresome and full of bewilderment. He portrays the camels carried with the caravan ,the far flung areas, pools surrounded by sand dunes, pastures, stones blackened by fire in hearth, stormy atmosphere, deserted look in the deserts etc. Though the caravan faced hardships still enjoying the journey with their songs, poetry and taking every good note of it.
Arab deserts and Arabic language have influenced Iqbal's poetry in different ways. Sometimes the influence is direct and tangible. On occasions it is symbolic. At times it appears in image.
He says:
" The Arabian desert which ( apparently) was only the abode of camel herds , in reality was a designer of civilization and a creator of the legal framework of sovereignty"
Similarly Iqbal declares that the contemporary era is the fruit of Arabian people's perspiring toils who turned their blood into water of the all-round progress of humanity.
" The present age is the offspring of your days. It's intoxication is due to your rosy wine. It is you who explained it's secrets. It is you who were its first founder"
He calls Arabian as " The desert dweller is the sentinel of nature"
In his poetry , it is mentioned the description of Arab deserts with the tribes, sand dunes, carefree loitering’s of the deer, stay without belongings, journey without milestones, gathering of caravan around the pool of water etc., portray the beauty and Islamic sensibilities of Arabs.
Iqbal Says: "In short it is not possible to explain the qualities and sensitivity in Islamic perspective the desert dwellers possessed, they were great conquerors, rulers, preservers and adorners of the world"
So Iqbal vehemently claims that the spirit of his poetry and his thought is Arabic thus Says:
" If my jar is Persian, does not matter,
My wine is Arabian.
If my song is Indian, does not matter,
My Melody is Arabian"
