Durand Cup Trophy tour begins in Manipur

Imphal, July 16: The iconic trophies of the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup were ceremonially flagged off from Sendra, Manipur, marking the commencement of the prestigious tournament's trophy tour amid celebrations of the state's rich footballing heritage and sporting legacy.

The ceremonial flag-off was led by Manipur Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Govindas Konthoujam, who described the Durand Cup as one of India's most celebrated sporting traditions and a source of inspiration for aspiring footballers across the country.
Escorted by the Thangjing Riders, the glittering trophies travelled through different parts of the state, drawing enthusiastic responses from football lovers, students and local residents. The tour showcased Manipur's deep-rooted association with football and highlighted the state's immense contribution to Indian football over the decades.
As part of the outreach programme, the trophies were displayed at Manipur University, where students and young football enthusiasts interacted with officials and celebrated the tournament's rich history. The event encouraged youth participation in sports and reinforced the importance of football in promoting discipline, teamwork and national integration.
The trophy tour concluded with a grand reception in Imphal, where Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla formally welcomed the trophies in the presence of Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh, Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh, Chief of Staff, Headquarters Eastern Command and Chairman of the Durand Cup Organising Committee, senior civil and military officials, sportspersons and football enthusiasts.
Speaking on the occasion, dignitaries highlighted Manipur's remarkable contribution to Indian football, noting that the state has consistently produced some of the country's finest footballers and athletes.
The trophy tour forms part of the nationwide promotional campaign for the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup, Asia's oldest football tournament, aimed at generating enthusiasm among fans and inspiring young players across the country.
Organisers said the event symbolises the spirit of football, national unity and youth empowerment while celebrating Manipur's enduring sporting culture and its pivotal role in the growth of Indian football.
