For ECE you need an Educator who is the best in the business and is a scholar. But, unfortunately, a reverse trend is observed in J&K schools. The best educators in the school teach primary, middle and higher levels
Early childhood education plays a critical role in shaping a child's development. Research shows that ECE has a profound impact on brain development laying the foundation for life long learning, health and behaviour.
SED (school education department) of J&K started ECE starting from the age three plus across the UT with the purpose of developing social and emotional skills, enhancing self confidence and providing a strong foundation for learning through plays and structured activities.
But, unfortunately, this ECE or kindergarten schooling in our J&K suffers due to lack of well trained educators.
For ECE you need an Educator who is the best in the business and is a scholar. But, unfortunately, a reverse trend is observed in J&K schools. The best educators in the school teach primary, middle and higher levels. This kills the purpose of ECE. And shakes the very foundation of social, emotional and Cognitive development.
Most of the resource persons are often seen surfing the internet, downloading content from foreign schools and trying to implement the same in J&K without knowing their applicability in real classroom situations in our schools operating in remote areas.
On one occasion as an academic monitor at Narabal (Budgam) I asked a few teachers about the benefits of studying early childhood education. Their answers were what most of the educators have. Sound FLN, writing, reading. My friends(fellow academic monitors) replied No. These are not. These may be the off shoots of the basic core of benefits. We had a productive discussion and my friend then started counting the basic benefits of studying ECE (early childhood education). These are, he continued :
Socialisation, cooperation, integrated development, the worth of education, team work.
My friend continued, "ECE is for fostering socialisation and friendship. It helps children to interact with peers, overcoming shyness and developing self confidence. This helps in overall development. During ECE children learn to interact, play and cooperate with peers and adults. This will help in developing social skills". A curious teacher asked us a question. How do we socialise the children? Could you illustrate? We replied, let us do it practically in the classroom of students ageing between three & six. Ten plastic rings of two colours green and red were arranged and put on the table.
Two beautiful kids Abass and Qasim were brought to the front. This was done tactfully without scaring them.
Abass and Qasim you have work to do for me. Abass will pick up the green rings and Qasim red ones. We left the spot and watched from a distance. Both were around four years of age. It's so beautiful to watch.
Abass picked up a green ring and said to Qasim, "Qashim Qashim yeh kali ring hai".Qasim this is black ring. Qasim replied, " Nahi nahi yeh red ring hai"No this is a red ring. They started becoming friends.
"Abass Abass chalo shir ko poochtai hain". Let us ask the teacher. We corrected and appreciated them. They now started kissing the hands of each other and sat together in the corner of the room.
In another group two girls were given a toy to play. They waited for their turn to play with the toy.
These illustrations show children learning to resolve minor disagreements. children learn to negotiate, share, emphasize empathy and understanding. children learn to resolve conflicts constructively, encouraging cooperation, communication and understanding social rules.
The teachers of the school were curious to learn more. We were also very curious to learn more.
What about the other benefits of ECE apart from socialisation, the teacher asked. We were short of time and promised him we would do it together next time.
When we left the school I asked myself a few questions.
If ECE is the foundation for holistic development, why don't the best educators of the government school engage them.
Why don't most of the teachers research and study the pedagogy of early childhood education in government schools?
Under the complex head of Narabal (Budgam) there are almost 10 Resource persons engaged with monitoring. Some of them are national awardees. Many RP's at zonal level, DIET, SCERT etc. Why a resource person is not directed to own a pre-primary class and spend a complete day in a pre primary class he is directed to own, at least once a week. Keeping in view the vast number of Rps, I think this will cover the majority of pre primary classes.
Are Resource persons selected through a proper screening by national level educationists for a period of two
years, as envisaged in the policy?
The ASER 2024 report for J&K indicates a decline in learning outcomes.
The Government of J&K SED ,leaves no stone unturned in lifting the education sector. Few concrete steps need to be taken to make our pre-primary classes or kindergarten schooling at par with private schools. The Resource persons will play a crucial part in it.
