Eid Celebrated with Joy

April 03, 2025 | Dr. Aasif Ahmad

Eid, one of the most awaited and joyous festivals for Muslims across the world, was celebrated with immense enthusiasm and fervor. The day marks the culmination of the holy month of Ramadan, a time of fasting, reflection, and devotion. Children, in particular, eagerly anticipate this day, looking forward to wearing new clothes, receiving Eidi from elders, and indulging in a variety of delicious dishes. Families come together, prayers are offered, and the spirit of unity and happiness spreads across communities.

However, amidst the joyful celebrations, an unsettling trend has been observed—the widespread use of firecrackers. It is bewildering to see how these explosives have become part of a festival that is meant to symbolize peace and gratitude. Many immature children, fascinated by the noise and light, spend their Eidi money on buying firecrackers. The delight they find in hearing the loud bursts and explosions is often short-lived, as these firecrackers offer nothing in return except momentary thrill and unnecessary hazards.
The dangers associated with firecrackers cannot be ignored. Every year, numerous cases of injuries, burns, and accidents are reported, especially among children who are unaware of the risks. The loud noise pollution disturbs not only people but also animals, causing distress to many. The question arises: why are firecrackers being sold so freely, especially on a festival that should be about joy and togetherness?
I personally witnessed a distressing incident on Eid. A woman was crossing the road when suddenly, a child threw a firecracker in her path. The firecracker exploded close to her, causing severe fright and minor burn injuries. She was so startled that she fell to the ground, creating panic among onlookers. The children involved were scolded, and many were even punished for their careless actions. But the real concern remains: who is responsible for such incidents? Is it the shopkeeper who sells firecrackers without any regulations? Is it the parents who fail to monitor their children’s spending? Or is it the local authorities that allow the sale of such hazardous items unchecked?
The thought of banning firecrackers during Eid celebrations crosses my mind. But will anyone listen? If I start a campaign urging authorities to regulate or ban the sale of firecrackers, will there be any change? Unfortunately, the harsh reality is that unless the government takes strict action, such incidents will continue to occur. There needs to be greater awareness and intervention at all levels. Local municipal bodies should step in and impose strict regulations on the sale of firecrackers, especially to children. Parents must educate their children about the dangers associated with them and encourage safer, more meaningful ways of celebrating Eid.
Eid is a festival that brings happiness, unity, and peace. It should not be marred by accidents, injuries, and unnecessary fear caused by reckless use of firecrackers. Let us take collective responsibility to ensure that Eid remains a joyous occasion for all, without the risk of harm. Celebrations should be about love, togetherness, and gratitude, not noise, pollution, and danger. It is time to rethink our traditions and ensure that they align with the true spirit of Eid.
