Eid-e-Milad: Celebrating the Light of Mercy and Guidance

Honoring the Prophet Muhammad’s Legacy of Compassion, Justice, and Unity and Knowledge to Inspire Generations across the World

September 05, 2025 | Shoiab Mohammad Bhat

Eid-e-Milad or Mawlid-un-Nabi is one of the most favorite celebrations in the Islamic calendar. It is the day of the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) birth anniversary when the Prophet of Islam was born in the holy city of Mecca in the year 570 CE. Muslims do not consider it just a celebration day but a very spiritual day of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) message of peace, justice, and compassion.

In 2025, Eid-e-Milad will be celebrated on September 5 in India and in most other countries worldwide. While millions of the faithful congregate in mosques, residences and public areas, the event is a chance to show one's love of the Prophet and take a look back at his life and teachings. It is a moment to recall that the Prophet had been dispatched as a mercy to the worlds," a mercy that remains the guiding light of humankind.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born in the Year of the Elephant, a year that is remembered for a miraculous event in Mecca. With his birth in the month of Rabiʿ al-Awwal came the arrival of light that would change the course of history. Centuries hence forward, Muslims officially marked the day with the conclusion of the Fatimid period in Egypt, when the celebrations were marked with the reading of the Qur'an, the recounting of his history, and the breaking of fasts in his name. Through the centuries, the custom spread to other locations where it included processions, Qur'anic readings, and giving in the form of alms and charity.
Eid-e-Milad is therefore more than a celebration of a day in history. It is commemorating a history of mercy and guidance. Throughout the Muslim world on this day mosques and streets are adorned with lights, Daroods and Naats are read in celebration of the Prophet. Celebrations come in the form of congregations where his Seerah, the history of his life has been read and deliberated upon. Families swap food with neighbors, and the poor and scholars of the Prophet remind society of the Prophet's guidance and teaching missions.
Essentially, Eid-e-Milad is highly symbolic. It is a token of the Prophet’s gratitude, an opportunity to reminisce about his teachings, and a celebration of communities coming together in warmth and unity. His way of living is a blueprint for a moral life, and his teachings are no less relevant in the contemporary world than they were in seventh-century Arabia.
The Prophet Muhammad (PUBH) personified the values that are the very spirit of Eid-e-Milad. Among the most valuable of the lessons is that of compassion and mercy. He pardoned the very people who wrongfully committed acts against him, teaching tolerance and kindness. Historically well-known is the forgiveness of the Prophet after the conquest of Mecca and it remains a beacon of mercy across the ages.
Another important lesson is justice and equality. The Prophet defended the rights of women, orphans, and the poor, and worked tirelessly to establish fairness in society. Eid-e-Milad becomes a day to remember that true devotion includes working for justice and defending the dignity of all people.
The Prophet also taught brotherhood and unity. When Arabia was divided by strife between tribes, he united the masses under the banner of a single God. He reminded that no human is better or superior to another in races or wealth but through piety and righteous actions only. Eid-e-Milad therefore calls Muslims to redouble bonds of brotherhood and rise above divisions.
Humility and simplicity are equally important lessons from the Prophet’s life. Despite being a leader, he lived modestly, mended his own clothes, and ate simple meals. His greatness was not in worldly wealth but in his character. Eid-e-Milad inspires believers to live with humility and service rather than pride and materialism.
Another excellent teaching is the seeking of knowledge. The Prophet made seeking knowledge obligatory upon every Muslim. Learning and wisdom were promoted and education esteemed in the society that he founded. Families and communities gather at the anniversary of the Eid-e-Milad to remind everyone of the value of investing in knowledge and giving wisdom for the coming centuries.
In today’s world, Eid-e-Milad means more than it ever has before. The current mode of existence is one of conflict, materialism and inequality. The Prophet’s message offers a way forward that is relevant for mankind, and always will be. His teachings remind families how to love and be patient with each other, and to respect each other within the home. To communities he fosters cooperation and compassion. To nations, he offers an example of modest and fair leadership. To mankind he reminds us to help the poor, take care of the environment and be good to each other.
Although the methods of celebration vary, the spirit of Eid-e-Milad is the same everywhere. Paying respect to the Prophet does not necessarily come through doing processions or decorations only, but through interpreting his Sunnah in our daily lives by being truthful, just, gentle, and gracious in every encounter. It is an invitation to renew faith and re-commit to the values of compassion, justice, humility, and knowledge.
This blessed day in 2025, Eid-e-Milad becomes more than a holiday. It becomes a wake-up call - a reminder that the best way to honour the Prophet is to live his character and clearly defined behaviour standards. May peace be embedded in our communities, may people thrive and co-exist, may we live with a sense of calm and safety, may natural disasters be minimized, we pray for the health and well-being of those suffering from floods and calamities, and may the deceased simply find peace. When we embody the birthday of the Prophet in its original essence, Eid-e-Milad is no longer just a day of celebration, it is a significant day that imparts light, peace, and kindness that transforms the world.
