January 19, 2026 | Mahbooba Hassan

National Startup Day in Kashmir is a reflection of the rising spirit of innovation, resilience, and do-it-yourself skills among the youth of this region. As a means of promoting the startup culture within the entire nation of India, the event celebrates the rising startup culture among the youth of Kashmir and the rising interest among the youth of this region, as well as the rest of the nation, to create startups. It highlights how startup culture is emerging as the driving force of development and employment within the region. The celebration also emphasizes the importance of understanding the opportunities and benefits associated with entrepreneurship. Observed on January 16 of every year, the reason for this observation is the significance of the launch of the Startup India Initiative. Announced in 2022, observation lies within the fact that the startup culture is playing a very important role in the promotion of innovation, development, and employment. These interactions will end up doing much good towards the growth of the startup ecosystem and will help the creation of many startups, thus facilitating sustainable development.

Talking about the significance related to Kashmir, the initiative becomes more than just an event with symbolism; it becomes an effective platform related to opportunity, transition, and hope. It plays an important part in encouraging youth in the valley to take up start-ups as an effective career option, considering that this region has unexploited potential with vast opportunities. It allows young brains in the valley to recognize local problems and transform them into effective business solutions by making smart use of local resources and integrating the latest advances in technology. This initiative becomes instrumental in bridging gaps related to the valley by providing start-ups with national access and exposure related to investors, advisors, and incubators. Such support fosters innovation and the reduced level of unemployment and becomes an effective way for entrepreneurs related to confidence and making effective contributions related to local economies. In summary, this points towards empowering the youth, nurturing a culture of innovation and self-growth, strengthening the startup ecosystem in Kashmir, and contributing towards sustainable development.
Support for startups is coming from various institutions and government initiatives in Kashmir. These Organizations support young entrepreneurs by providing training, mentorship, and funding. Additionally, the J&K Startup Policy has given a boost to the startup ecosystem by offering financial support along with clear policies. In this way, these efforts are helpful for the youth to convert their ideas into successful and sustainable businesses, contributing to the growth and development of the region.
The National Startup Day has proved to be a very important event for promoting women entrepreneurs in Kashmir. Women in the previous regime were facing various kinds of issues in the form of societal, cultural, and structural factors that barred women from starting their own business units. A lack of education, training, investment, and acceptance in society prevented women from entering the business world, which was an entirely male domain.
However, this trend has started to change. With the support of startup-focused events, training sessions, and other such activities, women are slowly becoming confident to start their own businesses. Government organizations and entrepreneurship development schemes have also helped women by providing them with money and markets to sell their ideas. This has resulted in women stepping out of their boundaries and exploring new avenues.
Today, scores of women in Kashmir are successfully running ventures in agriculture, handicrafts, food processing, and services sectors. They are earning for their families and also providing jobs to people within their communities. These Women entrepreneurs are becoming role models and inspiring many more girls to believe in their capabilities. Overall, such initiatives have contributing to promote gender equality and economic empowerment by standing for women-led entrepreneurship in Kashmir.
Kashmir is seeing a phenomenal rise in the number of inspiring women entrepreneurs who break barriers, drive economic growth, and create jobs across diverse sectors. These innovative females are shaping up traditions through innovation and grit.
In the transportation sector, Sadia Bhat has made history by starting the first cab service, Buraq, in Sopore. After her exemplary initiative, it can easily be said that Sadia Bhat is a symbol of women's empowerment as well as the increasing trend of hope and reliance among the youth of Kashmir.
Another remarkable example is Rabiya Yaseen from Pulwama, who became the first Kashmiri female to work as a truck driver, bodly challenging long-standing gender norms in a traditionally male-dominated field.
In the agricultural and allied sector, Rubeena Tabassum has emerged as a successful agripreneur. She has turned a barren land in Budgam into a successful lavender farm. She has established the United Floritech, through which they market their commodities under the name Kashmir Aromatics. Her enterprise generates substantial income and showcases the potential of innovation-driven rural entrepreneurship.
National Startup Day brings to mind the fact that Kashmir has a tremendous young generation with a huge amount of talent in store. Entrepreneurship can then be a driving force for the sustained growth and stability for the entire region if creativity is so nurtured.
