An ex-sarpanch was killed and a tourist couple from Rajasthan injured in twin terror attacks in south Kashmir on Saturday evening.
A police official said terrorists fired from close range towards an ex sarpanch Aijaz Ahmed Sheikh at Hurpora area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district in the evening.
Aijaz, who is said to be affiliated with BJP, sustained multiple bullet injuries in the attack and was evacuated to nearby hospital, where doctors declared him “brought dead”.
Immediately after the attack, police, CRPF and army men rushed to the area and launched a combing and search operation to track down the attackers.
In another attack, terrorists targeted a couple from Rajasthan by firing on them.
"Terrorists fired upon and injured a lady Farha and her spouse Tabrez, both residents of Jaipur, Rajasthan at Yannar, Anantnag. The injured were evacuated to the hospital for treatment,” the police official said.
He said after the attack, a joint contingent of police, CRPF and army laid siege around the area and launched a massive manhunt to track down the attackers.
The search operation was going on when reports last poured in, he said.
This is the latest attack on non-locals in Jammu and Kashmir in recent months.
In April, a non-local tourist guide was shot at by terrorists in Shopian district. The victim, Ranjit Singh, was accompanying foreign tourists and was having dinner at a local restaurant when terrorists fired at him.
In February, two non-locals were killed after terrorists opened fire at them in Srinagar.
