Fatima Zahra [SA]: The Guiding Woman

January 23, 2022 | Ulfat Riyaz

Fatima al Zahra SA is an excellent role model for both men and women alike. Imam Khomeini [RA] said "The history of Islam is witness to the immense respect that the Prophet [SAW] had for Hazrat Zahra [SA] which also powerfully reflects on the importance of women in society. If they are not superior to men, they are definitely not any inferior.

Understanding Fatima Zahra [SA] in this modern age is a difficult task and following her footsteps is a revolutionary act. In a society where conscientious people are ridiculed and morally depraved are honoured, where pure is primitive and perverse is progressive talking about Fatima is a challenge let alone understanding and accepting her as an ideal. There is no other way either. To come out of the morass we are in as a society, Fatima is the only hope. She is an embodiment of faith and at the same time a symbol of resistance. She can enlighten and at the same time empower those who show predilection of following in her footsteps.
The multidimensional personality of Fatima Zahra [SA] is an illuminated ideal of all women of the world, her greatness is not limited to any particular time period or location. As stated by the prophet of Islam [SAW], Fatima [SA] is the best women ever, from the beginning of time, up to its end. Emphasizing on this point, Ayatollah Khamenei said ‘Hazrat e Fatima is the role model for women throughout history and for all generations, past, present and future. The Divine aspect of human beings is perfectly manifested in her."
Fatima [SA] was a very knowledgeable person, a fact that was acknowledged by friends and foes alike. In fact, from time to time, she would make herself available for people who needed answers or clarifications on difficult and complicated issues. Her sermons, poems and sayings are evidence of her intellectual, strength of character and nobility of mind. She was an embodiment of all virtues of womanhood, an exemplary daughter, a loving and supportive wife, a caring mother
and a powerful and aware member of a society.
In spite of all these feminine qualities, Hazrat Fatima [SA] was also a very courageous lady who accompanied the noble Prophet [SAW] in thirty wars. She was also well-aware of her rights and whenever necessary stood up for them, instead of suffering like a helpless victim. These qualities are also well-reflected in the lives of her great children. Who are also well-known for their piety, goodness, courage and generosity. She was a prominent and distinguished scholar too. The sermon that Fatima Zahra delivered in the Mosque of Medina after the demise of the Prophet is the same sermon according to Alama Majlisi , all the elders ,rhetoricians ,studious men and scholars should come together to interpret its phases and words. she spoke using the best and most beautiful phrases and the most cognitive and selective meanings .It is very rich in terms of artistic beauty .It is like the most beautiful and sublime words of Najul Balagha.
Hazrat e Zahra [SA] inherited the genius, wisdom, determination, will power, piety, patience, knowledge and nobility from her illustrious father, both in words and deeds. From political, social and striving aspects, the character of Zahra is a distinctive and outstanding one in a way that all striving, revolutionary, prominent and political women can learn a lesson from her short and rich life. From the historical records one can easily appreciate how she fulfilled her responsibilities to the
utmost level of self sacrifice .Thus, we can see how, in a short span of her life, this grand lady demonstrated how a woman can play different roles powerfully, and positively influence the course of history by her social contribution. From all aspects she lived a life tied with action, effort and the development and spiritual transcendence of a human being.
Then why have women been lost to either outdated forms or new imports? Why has she been exploited? The western world has degraded the position and status of women very badly. The media portrays the women rights in Islam. We have no option but to agree that the women rights in Islam have subjugated and they are not protected. The western talk of women’s liberalization is nothing but a disguise form of exploitation of a body, deprivation of honor and degradation of a soul.
The western societal model replaced the value women attained through Islam. The Western society are claiming to uplift women have actually degraded her to a status of concubine mistress and a society but of lies, which are employed as mere tools in the hands of sex marketers and pleasure seekers, which are hidden behind the colourful screens of art and culture. They are bought and sold according to the positive negative qualities of their sexual attractions .Islam gave women their due rights 1400 years ago during the age of ignorance.
It is high time for moulding our lives and societies through understanding the life lived by Hazrat Fatima Zahra [s.a] following her footsteps and learn from her extraordinary attributes. We must get closer to this centre of light, and the requirement of getting closer to the centre of this light is being luminous .We should be illuminated not just with a mere love but with the deeds .We should make efforts in the arena of ethical and spiritual self education and be a pioneer in the arena of various kinds of striving and struggling without being hopeless and disappointed. She is certainly guiding star under all circumstances for a woman. So she should spare no effort in trying to understand her dignity and glory in order to know ourselves and our status and to make the world better than ever. As Dr Ali shariati had beautifully sketched the profound character and personality of Fatima zehra as . He revitalized the political and moral character of her life and tried to contemporize her ideal life as an alternative and corrective paradigm for the both the traditional and modern woman in the current times. He looked beyond the binary contradictions and presented her with comprehensive role model to aviod the imitation of west and traditional orthodoxy in socities.
Declaring the Birthday of Hazrat Zahra [SA] as "Woman's Day", Imam Khomeini [r.a] has said "This day is like the day of revival of real womanhood and the day of foundation-building for the important and respectable role, woman play in the society." He said "If you don't learn from her asceticism, piety, modesty and other virtues, you have not even understood the true essence of womanhood."
