Srinagar, Oct 25: Fire and Emergency Services personnel battled a massive blaze for nearly seven hours at Mir Sales Corporation, Kaka Sarai, Karan Nagar, Srinagar, during the intervening night of October 24-25, preventing the fire from spreading to the adjoining six-storeyed Medicare Hospital.
The fire, which broke out during the night, engulfed four commercial structures and a large iron shed containing furnishing materials, polythene, tarpaulins and other combustible items, causing extensive damage.
Considering the intensity of the blaze and the risk to neighbouring buildings, approximately 12 fire stations and 20 fire tenders were deployed. The fire was brought under control at around 5:30 am on October 25 after sustained firefighting operations.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Director, Fire and Emergency Services, J&K, Alok Kumar, and led on the ground by Deputy Director, F&ES Command Srinagar, Dr Aqib Hussain Mir. Firefighting resources were mobilised from Srinagar and adjoining areas.
In coordination with J&K Police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other agencies, personnel also evacuated patients from Medicare Hospital as a precautionary measure. All patients were safely evacuated, while timely intervention helped protect the hospital and nearby structures from direct fire damage.
Alok Kumar appreciated the personnel for their courage, professionalism and coordinated response, particularly their efforts to safeguard patients and prevent the fire from spreading further.
He also acknowledged the support extended by J&K Police, SDRF and other responding agencies, reiterating the department's commitment to protecting lives and property across Jammu and Kashmir.
The operation reflected the dedication of firefighting personnel to their motto, “We Serve to Save.”
