Srinagar, Oct 7 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said his government is focused on developing sports infrastructure along with appointing coaches to promote new sports disciplines among the youth.
Speaking after inaugurating sports facilities including an Olympic-size swimming pool and an indoor gymnastics hall here Omar said earlier coaches were appointed without infrastructure, but now both are being developed simultaneously.
"We want to take our children beyond cricket, football, hockey and volleyball. For the first time in Kashmir, an Olympic-size swimming pool has come up with solar heating facility so children can train for 12 months. Similarly, a magnificent indoor gymnastics hall has been inaugurated. Earlier, gymnastics was associated only with Jammu," he said.
On the recent administrative reshuffle ordered by the Lieutenant Governor, the Chief Minister said it is part of the system and the government will work with officers wherever they are posted.
On cabinet expansion, Omar said he will discuss the matter with NC President Dr. Farooq Abdullah after attending the GST Council meeting in Delhi on Wednesday. "I had said it will be done after the Assembly session. The session has just concluded," he said.
Regarding Business Rules, which have been pending since 2020, Omar said they are almost ready and are being given final shape to remove contradictions. "We did not want to do it in haste. It will be notified soon," he said.
On protests over Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Omar said if the Indian Express report was fabricated, a defamation case should have been filed. "Since no action has been taken, we will assume what the newspaper wrote is correct," he said, adding that the SIR exercise is aimed at helping the BJP by tampering with voter lists.
He said the INDIA bloc's month-long programme against SIR, as announced by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, will also be started in Jammu and Kashmir.
