Srinagar, Aug 15: Independence Day 2026 was marked with a call to transform the spirit of freedom into a shared responsibility towards the nation, with an emphasis on unity, constitutional values, peace and inclusive progress.

The message stressed that Independence Day should not be viewed merely as a ceremonial celebration but as an occasion to remember the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and reflect on the responsibilities that come with living in a free and democratic nation.
People were urged to cherish the values enshrined in the Constitution and contribute collectively towards building a stronger, peaceful and prosperous India. The Tricolour was described as a symbol of unity, hope and the country's continuing journey of progress.
The message also placed Jammu and Kashmir within the larger national celebration, emphasising that the spirit of Independence Day extends from the Union Territory to every corner of the country.
The occasion marked the 80th Independence Day, commemorating India's journey since gaining independence in 1947. Across the country, citizens, government institutions, educational organisations and security forces participated in flag-hoisting ceremonies and patriotic programmes.
The message called upon citizens to ensure that the ideals associated with freedom remain reflected in everyday life through responsible citizenship, respect for constitutional principles and a commitment to the welfare of society.
It further highlighted the enduring relevance of national symbols and the spirit of Vande Mataram, urging people to draw inspiration from the sacrifices and aspirations that shaped India's freedom struggle.
