Srinagar, April 2: Unregulated garbage dumping in the Natipora–Nowgam area of Srinagar has led to a growing stray dog menace, leaving residents—especially children and the elderly—living in fear.
Locals say several dumping spots in and around residential lanes have turned into feeding grounds for stray dogs. As a result, packs of dogs gather in large numbers, particularly during evening hours, making it difficult for people to step out of their homes.
“After sunset, it becomes risky to even walk a short distance. Children and elderly people are the most vulnerable,” said a resident, adding that frequent barking and chasing incidents have created panic in the locality.
Residents allege that the absence of proper waste management and irregular garbage collection has worsened the situation. Open piles of waste not only emit foul odor but also attract stray animals, increasing the chances of dog attacks.
Many families have reportedly restricted outdoor movement of children, while elderly residents fear venturing out even for essential tasks. Locals have urged authorities to immediately clear garbage dumps and implement a proper disposal system to prevent further escalation.
They have also called for measures to control the stray dog population, warning that the issue could turn into a serious public safety concern if not addressed promptly.
Despite repeated complaints, residents claim that little action has been taken so far. They are now appealing to the administration to intervene urgently and ensure both sanitation and safety in the area.
