
City Centre Lal Chowk and its adjacent areas in Kashmir capital Srinagar remained closed on Thursday to commemorate the 31st anniversary of victims of Gawkadal massacre on this day in 1990.
No one has called for shutdown today in the areas. “The shutdown was spontaneous. Who can forget that gory massacre of 1990 on this day,” said a local of Maisuma said adding this strike is being observed to remember the victims and express solidarity with the survivors of the massacre.
All the shops and other business establishments remained closed in the city centre. However, public transport was plying normally.
At least fifty-one civilians were killed on January 21, 1990 when CRPF personnel opened fire at a procession in Gawkadal area of Srinagar. Several women had been molested by the CRPF men in Chotta Bazar area of Srinagar city, a day earlier during a search operation.
Meanwhile, Business activities were crippled in the civil lines in summer capital, Srinagar, on the anniversary of “Gaw Kadal Massacre” as on this day in 1990 over 50 persons were killed in alleged security force firing when they were coming out from a mosque.
The firing incident took place two days after centre appointed Jagmohan as the Governor for the second time in a bid to control massive protests in the Kashmir valley, demanding separation from the country.
However, traffic was plying and banks and other government and private departments were functioning normally.
Shops and business establishments in the historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the city and other major business hubs, including Gantaghar, Court road, Maisuma, Koker Bazar, Budshah Chowk, Residency and Moulana Azad roads, Amira Kadal, Gaw Kadal, Red Cross road, Exchange road remained closed.
Business activities also remained crippled in otherwise busy Gonikhan and Mahraj Bazar. However, partial strike was observed in Hari Singh High Street (HSHS), where about 50 per cent shops were functioning though the number of customers was less.
Situation elsewhere in the city was normal with shops and business establishments open. Traffic was also plying on all routes normally.
