GMC hosts CME on obstetric Sepsis to enhance maternal care

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar organized a one-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) program on "Obstetric Sepsis – Fate or Failure to Act".
The event aimed to raise awareness, improve early recognition, and promote evidence-based management of obstetric sepsis, a major contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality.
Prof. (Dr) Iffat Hassan Shah, Principal/Dean, GMC Srinagar, inaugurated the CME, emphasizing the importance of timely intervention, clinical vigilance, and ongoing professional education in improving maternal outcomes.
Prof. (Dr) Syed Masuma Rizvi, Head of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, highlighted the need to empower healthcare providers with updated clinical knowledge and protocols to effectively address sepsis care challenges.
The scientific sessions featured expert presentations from renowned faculty members, including Dr. Irshad, Dr. Humaira Bashir, Dr. Sana Attar, and Prof. Ajaz Nabi Koul, who discussed contemporary practices in sepsis management, microbial resistance trends, and practical approaches for frontline care.
Panel discussions brought together former Heads of Department and senior faculty, Prof. Rizwana Habib Kanth, Prof. Shaheena Parveen, Prof. Shylla Mir, Prof. Muzaffar Maqbool, Prof. Farhat Jabeen, and Prof. Nighat Firdous fostering rich case-based discussions and exploring strategies for systemic improvement.
The CME saw enthusiastic participation from postgraduate students, residents, and faculty members across various disciplines, reaffirming the department's commitment to academic excellence and advancing maternal healthcare. The event concluded with a valedictory session, reiterating the need for timely, coordinated, and evidence-driven responses in sepsis care to safeguard maternal lives.
CME was also attended by Mohamad Ashraf Hakak, Administrator Associated Hospitals; HOD Surgery, Prof. Dr.Iqbal Saleem, various faculty members from GMC Srinagar including Prof. Dr. Javid Naqashbandi, Dr. Irfan Ali, Medical Superintendent Dr Muzaffar Jan. Deputy Medical superintendent Dr.Mymoona Gul and other staff members.
