Govt boosts sports, concludes Wushu Championship: Min Sharma

Jammu, Mar 30: Minister for Youth Services & Sports, Science and Technology Satish Sharma today reaffirmed the government's pledge and plans towards revamping the sports sector in Jammu and Kashmir while encouraging youth empowerment and excellence.

The Minister, while presiding over the closing ceremony of the 19th UT Jammu & Kashmir Wushu Championship 2025 at Bhagwati Nagar's Indoor Hall, outlined his vision of transforming Jammu & Kashmir into a vibrant sporting hub, emphasizing that youth development through sports remains a top priority of the government.
Satish Sharma congratulated the Jammu district team on winning the championship, showcasing their exceptional talent. He also applauded runners-up Srinagar district and Khelo India Centre Jammu for their impressive show.
“Sports are not just competitions but they are instruments of social transformation, discipline and empowerment. Our government is committed to identify talent at the grassroots level and provide them international-standard facilities and exposure,” asserted Satish Sharma.
Highlighting the scale and success of the four-day championship, the Minister noted that participation of nearly 1,200 players from across districts, Khelo India Centres and the J&K Police reflects the growing enthusiasm for sports in Jammu and Kashmir. He credited such large-scale participation to sustained policy support, improved infrastructure, and targeted initiatives aimed at youth engagement.
Reaffirming his department’s proactive approach, the Minister stressed that special focus is being laid on strengthening sports ecosystems in rural and far-flung areas to ensure equal opportunities for all. He said the government is working in a mission mode to expand training facilities, enhance coaching standards, and create pathways for athletes to compete at national and international levels.
Satish Sharma also commended the Wushu Association of J&K for its role in promoting the sport and organizing the championship successfully. He assured full governmental support to sports associations that are actively contributing towards nurturing talent and promoting excellence.
“The remarkable performances witnessed here are a testament to the immense potential of J&K’s youth. Our aim is to ensure that this talent receives the right platform, guidance and recognition to shine on the global stage,” he added.
The Minister further emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government bodies, sports associations, and stakeholders to build a sustainable and competitive sports culture in the region.
Earlier, the organizers briefed the Minister about the achievements and progress of Wushu in J&K while expressing gratitude for the continued support from the government under his leadership.
The Championship witnessed participation of approximately 1,200 athletes from 25 teams, which included representation from all districts, Khelo India Centres and J&K Police.
Jammu district emerged as Overall Winner with 57 medals (Gold 15, Silver 14, Bronze 28) District Srinagar with 26 medals (Gold 12, Silver 7, Bronze 7) was the runner up while Khelo India Centre Jammu with 25 medals (Gold 9, Silver 7, Bronze 9) was the second runner up.
