A famous 20th century Shiva temple in Gulmarg of Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, which enjoys close links to the valley's history as well as Bollywood, was gutted in a massive fire on Wednesday.
Fire and Emergency Services officials said that the blaze started around 3.50 am causing extensive damage to the religious structure.
The fire was contained within 20 minutes due to hectic efforts from the fire and emergency personnel. In the incident, the roofing, interior panelling and other infrastructure of the temple suffered damage.
However, no injury was reported in the fire incident.
The investigation has been set into motion to ascertain the cause of fire.
Situated atop a hillock, the Rani temple or Mohineshwar Shivalaya, is also famous for Bollywood hit number "Jai Jai Shiv Shankar" starring matinee heartthrob Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz from film “Aap Ki Kasam” shot in 1974.
Several fire tenders from nearby fire stations were rushed to the spot to douse the flames. The cause of the fire is being ascertained, the officials said.
The Maharani Temple was built by Mohini Bai Sisodhia, wife of Maharaja Hari Singh in 1915.
On hearing about the fire at Shiv Temple in Gulmarg, Vikramaditya Singh, former MLC and Trustee of the J&K Dharmarth Trust flew to Srinagar and directly reached Gulmarg to take stock of the situation. The fire incident has tragically reduced the historic structure to ashes.
The temple, constructed in 1915 by the late Princess of Dharamkot State in Gujarat, the grandmother of Vikramaditya Singh, holds deep sentimental value for the erstwhile royal family of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chairman Trustee, Dr. Karan Singh, along with Trustees of the J&K Dharmarth Trust and members of the Royal Family, has expressed deep grief and anguish over this untoward incident.
During the visit, the Additional Secretary, Consulting Engineer, and other officials of the Trust accompanied the Trustee.
Although the official records from the Fire and Police Departments are yet to be received, preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit.
