Hailstorm Devastates Apple Orchards: A Call for Reflection and Responsibility

September 04, 2024 | Dr. Aasif Ahmad Dar

In recent days, the picturesque apple orchards, which are the lifeblood of many families in our region, have suffered a devastating blow due to an unexpected hailstorm. The once lush and fruitful trees now stand battered, their produce scattered on the ground, rendering months of hard work and anticipation fruitless. The sight of this devastation has sparked a flurry of social media activity, with many people uploading videos and capturing snapshots of the destruction. However, amidst the rush to document the event, few seem to grasp the depth of the suffering faced by the apple growers.

This tragedy goes beyond mere financial loss; it is a blow to the very soul of the farmers who have nurtured these trees with care and dedication. It raises a profound question: how can one endure such a loss, and what can be done to prevent such calamities in the future?
From an Islamic perspective, this situation calls for deep reflection and a return to fundamental principles. According to Sharia, every Muslim is obligated to give a portion of their harvest, known as *Usher*, to those in need. This is a form of *Zakat*, one of the pillars of Islam, and it is a way of showing gratitude to Allah for His blessings. When we fail to fulfill this obligation, we not only risk our spiritual wellbeing but also invite hardship and loss upon ourselves. The recent hailstorm serves as a stark reminder of this.
Islam teaches that everything we receive from the earth—be it fruits, grains, or any other sustenance—is a blessing from Allah. By giving *Usher*, which is typically one-tenth of the produce, we acknowledge this divine bounty and ensure that our wealth is purified. This act of charity not only helps those in need but also protects our crops and ensures their growth in the future. It’s a deep belief that by sharing a portion of what we receive, we are blessed with more in return.
However, many of us have strayed from this path. Our hearts have become consumed with materialism, and our connection to the land—and by extension, to Allah—has weakened. We neglect the essential practices of *Usher* and *Zakat*, and in doing so, we make our land impure. This spiritual neglect is reflected in the calamities we face, such as the recent hailstorm. It’s as if the blessings of Allah have been withheld because we have failed in our duties.
To regain Allah’s favor and protect our lands from future harm, we must turn back to these fundamental Islamic principles. We need to cleanse our hearts, strengthen our faith, and fulfill our obligations to give *Usher* and *Zakat*. By doing so, we can restore balance in our lives and seek Allah’s mercy in both this world and the hereafter.
In addition to material charity, we must also purify our intentions and ensure that our prayers (*duas*) are sincere. When our hearts are pure, and our actions are in line with Islamic teachings, our prayers will have the power to change our circumstances for the better. We need to reflect on the state of our hearts and our communities and strive to cultivate positive virtues that will bring success in both worlds.
In conclusion, the hailstorm is a wake-up call, reminding us that our wellbeing is intricately linked to our spiritual duties. Let us return to the path of righteousness, fulfill our obligations, and seek forgiveness and blessings from Allah. Only then can we hope for a future where our orchards flourish and our communities thrive, under the protection and grace of the Almighty.
