Hammam: The Super Queen in Winter

The practice of setting up hammams has been a long-standing tradition in Kashmir. Among all the winter preparations. It remains priority. It is mostly used during cold or when it snows. No doubt there are numerous heating gadgets nowadays, yet everyone prefers to use it for beating the chill.

Traditions of Hammam has been first introduced in 1586 in Kashmir by Mughals Emperor Akbar. Gradually during the later part of 19th century these hammams were also linked with residential architecture of the region, when many wealthy merchants constructed hammams within their residences. Since then Mughals innovation got widespread demand in Kashmir. This architecture remains a place for comfort and warmth.
Hammam is a room in which thick hand hewn rectangular slabs of stones are laid over hollowed out floor, column of brick support are erected for slabs at the joint. Each slab sculpted from the blocks of rock extracted from quarry. Inside the hammam bricks are sealed with lime mortar. Inside floor is strewn with green/brown sand in order to absorb and retain heat. Firewood is place in Hamam through a small iron door. This is a feasible remedy for chill and snowy atmosphere.
In the month of December and January when temperature dips to minus hammams occupy central place in terms of it's warmth and comfort. Kashmiris are reluctant to use room heaters, electric gadgets due to pesky power supply which resulted the use of limestone hammams Or Rajasthani hammam. As the demand surged Hammam making became super-speciality.
A Turkish origin tool is believed to have been introduced in Kashmir by the Mughals. Initially it was restricted to masjids now economically well off families own apiece each. Hammam has been the feature of Kashmiri society since the Mughals times and there is an information of it being prevalent during the Pandava brothers of Mahabharata fame. Besides cuisines arts and crafts hammams continue to be one of the most lavish traditions in Kashmir. According to experts, in the past physicians advised expecting mothers and people suffering from orthopaedic ailments to spend time in hammams. In addition to hammams people now install steamer at the front of small door for the purpose of using warm water and this wider acceptance in Kashmir is primarily due to cold and harsh winters.
Hammams are one time investment cost effective and a majority of people in Kashmir have their own private luxurious hammams at home. According to research, Mughal hammams in Kashmir had three main sections: a dressing room, cold room and hit room. The architecture and style of today's hammam vary from those hammams built by Mughals. Coming to technological advancements, the electric hammam in Kashmir is witnessing a boom, with manufacturers and suppliers working tirelessly to meet the rising demand. The surge in installation not only underscores a cultural shift but also positions Kashmir as trendsetter in redefining contemporary home spaces.
Keeping the geographical location, Kashmir is situated in Northern Hemisphere bounded by tall ranges, South east, north and west the area is characterised by sever cold and chill in winter. The weather frequently remain cold and frost in hilly regions of the valley than in the plain areas. This cold and frost variations among various districts is due to geo-locations. During this 40 or 50 days the aged populace suffers from joint pain, back pain etc Kashmiris have chosen right option to treat all ailments by installing super Hammams. Warmth through electronic gadgets is always dangerous, so it is better to resort for installing limestone hammams.
