
Srinagar sizzles at 37.4 °C, hottest July in over 70 years
Severe heatwave continues to impact Kashmir with Srinagar on Saturday new temperature record for July at 37.4 degree Celsius.
“At 37.4°C, Srinagar, Srinagar recorded its third highest temperature for July,” a MeT official said.
He said today’s maximum temperature was the hottest July day in Srinagar since 1953.
“The temperature was two notches below the second highest (37.7°C) recorded on 5 July 1953,” the MeT official said.
Srinagar recorded its all time highest maximum temperature of 38.3°C on 10 July 1946.
The Pahalgam tourist resort in south Kashmir recorded its all time highest maximum temperature of 31.6°C, surpassing previous highest of 31.5°C on 21 July 2024.
Kokernag tourist resort in south Kashmir recorded its 2nd highest ever maximum temperature at 34.0°C.
The highest ever temperature in Kokernag in July is 34.1°C, which was recorded on 28 July 2024.
The Kupwara town in the border district recorded 35.9°C, the highest since 2006.
Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, touched 34.6°C, the second-highest July temperature ever recorded there.
The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a day temperature of 27.6°C, which is 5.8°C above normal.
With maximum temperature touching new heights, parents and students have urged authorities to extend the ongoing summer vacations by at least a week.
There is a possibility of breather from the ongoing heatwave, as the Meteorological department has forecast scattered light to moderate rain and thundershowers over the Union Territory in the next 24 hours.
“From July 6-8, the weather will be generally cloudy with possibility of intermittent light to moderate rain/thundershower at many places. Few places may receive intense showers with heavy rain at isolated places of Jammu region mainly towards late night/ early morning,” he said.
He said July 9-10, there was a possibility of light to moderate rain and thundershower at scattered to many places in J&K.
“Hot & humid weather with brief showers is expected at scattered places on July 11-12,” the MeT official said.
