Honouring the Spirit

July 27, 2025 |

Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed every year on July 26, is a solemn reminder of the extraordinary courage and unwavering spirit of the Indian armed forces. On this day in 1999, India emerged victorious in Operation Vijay, successfully pushing back Pakistani intruders from the heights of Kargil in Jammu and Kashmir. The victory, achieved through immense sacrifice and determination, is etched in the heart of every Indian. This day is not just about remembering a military triumph—it is about paying tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives to protect the sovereignty of the nation. Young officers and jawans, some barely out of training academies, braved harsh weather, treacherous terrain, and an entrenched enemy to recapture strategic peaks. Their grit and bravery remain unparalleled. In the 25 years since that hard-fought victory, India has grown in strength and global stature. Yet, the lessons of Kargil remain relevant. The conflict exposed lapses in intelligence and coordination, prompting long-term reforms in our defence preparedness. It also reinforced the need for eternal vigilance along our borders, particularly in high-altitude regions. Kargil Vijay Diwas is also a moment to reflect on the nature of patriotism. True nationalism lies not just in flag-waving or slogans, but in standing with the values our soldiers defend—integrity, unity, and the will to serve. As the country salutes its heroes, we must also renew our commitment to the welfare of soldiers and their families. Veer Naris, disabled veterans, and serving personnel deserve more than just symbolic gratitude. They need robust policy support, timely benefits, and a dignified life post-service. Let us mark this day not just with ceremony, but with sincerity. Let it remind us of our collective responsibility to preserve the peace and freedom earned through sacrifice. Kargil Vijay Diwas is not only a day of remembrance—it is a call to uphold the spirit of duty and resilience that defines the soul of India.
