The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) is a statutory body established by the Government of India and came into effect from 13th February, 1986. The Authority replaced the Processed Food Export Promotion Council (PFEPC). Its main mandate is to promote the export of agricultural and processed food products from India. APEDA acts as a bridge between Indian farmers/exporters and global markets by supporting them with promotion, quality certification, infrastructure, capacity building, and financial incentives. This not only increases agri-export earnings but also boosts farmer income and India’s global trade footprint.
It promotes Indian products globally through trade fairs, buyer-seller meets, branding campaigns like Brand India, and targeted promotion of products such as Basmati rice, mangoes, millets, and GI-tagged items. APEDA ensures quality and compliance by registering exporters, providing traceability systems (like Hortinet and TraceNet), recognizing testing laboratories, and certifying organic exports under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP).
APEDA also strengthens export infrastructure by supporting packhouses, cold chains, processing units, and quality labs under its Financial Assistance Scheme. It also builds capacity through training on international standards, SPS measures, and packaging. By offering financial aid, market intelligence, and policy advocacy, APEDA bridges the gap between farmers, FPOs, startups, and global markets. In doing so, it not only expands India’s agri-export footprint but also enhances farmer incomes and the competitiveness of Indian products worldwide.
APEDA is mandated with the responsibility of export promotion and development of the various scheduled products that include fruits, vegetables and their products, meat and meat products, poultry and poultry products, dairy products, confectionery, biscuits and bakery products, honey, jaggery and sugar products, cocoa and its products, chocolates of all kinds, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, cereal and cereal products, groundnuts, peanuts and walnuts, pickles, papads and chutneys, guar gum, floriculture and floriculture products, herbal and medicinal plants, de-oiled rice bran, green pepper in brine, cashew nuts and its products. In the fiscal period of 2022-23, India's agricultural exports soared to USD 53.1 billion, with APEDA contributing a substantial 51 per cent to India's Agri-exports. India's exports of fruits and vegetables have seen a significant surge, growing by 47.3% in volume between the financial years 2019-20 and 2023-24, as per data from the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. This growth is largely attributed to the financial assistance schemes (FAS) provided by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Department of Commerce. Country's fresh produce now reaches 123 nations, supported by APEDA's strategic initiatives to enhance export infrastructure. Over the past three years, India has successfully entered 17 new markets, including Brazil, Georgia, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, the Czech Republic, and Ghana. To sustain this momentum, the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW) and APEDA have identified key products and target countries for focused trade negotiations.
