Dr.Zubair Rashid’s Heart team in Hospital , is a collection of variety of medical specialties like Cardio Vascular and Thoracic surgeons, cardiac anaesthesiologists, Physician assistants, Adult and pediatric cardiologists, Pulmonologists, Medical and cardiac surgical intensivists, Cardio Thoracic ICU Nurses ,Cardiac theatre techs, cardiopulmonary physiotherapists and other procurement and supporting staff. One of the most important members in a cardiac surgical team are Perfusionists. In other words, those who run heart -Lung machine during open Heart surgeries in Theatres.
Perfusion team is the second most important wing,just after surgeons and cardiac anaesthesiologists in a cardiac surgical setup says Dr.Zubair, without which Cardiac surgery is impossible to run.
As cardiac surgery, Perfusion technology is recent development in medicine. Its jus 50-60 years old, when Dr.John Gibbon developed first heart lung machine in 1955,says Ms Sauliha, who’s the leading lady in this heart Team along with Ms.Heena and other technical staff. They say” Surgeon stops the heart, we take over with our Heart -Lung Machine, till the work is done by the surgeon ,and ,when Heart is ready to take its function back, we kick start it, again”. But its not that easy as we say. It requires tremendous dedication, hard work, efficiency & concentration .The margin of error is literally zero.
They have done their Bachelors in Perfusion Technology from SKIMS soura.
Very few people opt for this course because of less opportunities in the valley,but it is in demand outside the valley where there are lot of cardiac surgical units running, discusses Ms Sauliha & Ms Heena. We were working as honorary in skims, after our course completion ,for 2 years ,when Dr Zubair called me and asked to join him in corporate setup, says Ms Sauliha .Now its almost a year working independently and feels good when we see heart patients going home happy after surgeries.
Though it was a difficult decision for me but it has proved the best one , as i have gained more confidence and I have learned a lot ,says Ms Heena. They enjoy working very closely with the heart team in operation theatres and has a lot of potential for learning, though a challenging one.
The Duo is urging young and dynamic people who are interested in this field of medicine to join Bsc In Perfusion Technology also called Extracorporeal Technology with, association of its name ,Indian Association Of Extracorporeal Technology(ISECT).
Extracorporeal Technology is much more than Heart Lung Machine, It includes more sophisticated and technicaly demanding procedures like Ventricular Assist Devices(VADS),Artificial Hearts ,Heart and Lung Transplantion and advanced treatment of Heart Failure, says Dr.Zubair & Dr Tariq.
Hospital is in peruse to start this course and are in talking terms with ISECT and other medical bodies for registration of the course along with their other paramedical courses, mentions Mr Manzoor A Wagay (MD Noora Hospital) for the benefit of these students of the valley.
