The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe weather advisory for Jammu and Kashmir, forecasting widespread rain and snowfall from April 18 to April 20, with peak intensity expected between Friday night and late Saturday.
An active western disturbance is set to bring moderate to heavy rain and snow, especially over the Pir Panjal Range and the middle and higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley. Thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and gusty winds up to 70 km/h are also likely, the IMD said in a communication to Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu.
High-impact zones include:
Anantnag–Pahalgam
Kulgam, Sinthan Pass
Shopian, Pir Ki Gali
Sonamarg–Zojila
Bandipora–Razdan Pass
Gulmarg, Kupwara–Sadhna Pass
The IMD has warned of possible travel disruptions along key roads including the Jammu–Srinagar and Srinagar–Leh national highways, due to snow accumulation, poor visibility, and landslides.
Farmers across the Union Territory have been advised to suspend all field activities until April 21 afternoon, to avoid damage to crops and equipment. A rise in water levels in streams, rivers, and nallahs is anticipated, increasing the risk of flooding and waterlogging, particularly in low-lying areas.
District administrations have been asked to remain on high alert and ensure readiness of road clearance and emergency response teams. Preventive steps are also being taken in vulnerable areas to minimize public inconvenience and ensure safety.
