It will play vital role in preserving, promoting Kashmir’s literary heritage: Expert

January 20, 2024 | KAMRAN SHAMSHAD

As the Kashmiri language goes global with the inclusion in Microsoft digital translator, the literary figures have called it a groundbreaking move, which will play a vital role in preserving and promoting Kashmir’s literary heritage.
Following its integration into Microsoft Digital Translator, the language is now making its mark on Google Digital Translator, opening the doors of Kashmiri literature to a diverse audience around the world.
This inclusion not only amplifies the reach of Kashmiri literature but also serves as a testament to the significance of the language
This significant development comes at a crucial juncture when speakers of the language are increasingly transitioning to other linguistic mediums. With only a fraction of the society proficient in reading and writing Kashmiri, the integration into Microsoft's platform promises to shatter linguistic barriers, offering Kashmiri writers an international stage for their creations.
Former Director of CBS, Radio Kashmir, Shamshad Kralawari termed it a welcome move and a pivotal step in the resurrection of the Kashmiri language.
"The integration into Microsoft Digital Translator is poised to play a vital role in preserving and promoting the linguistic and literary heritage of Kashmir," he said
While expressing gratitude to Microsoft and Google, Kralawari said, "This highlights the significance of preserving our mother tongue in every societal stratum."
Addressing the prevalent trend of native Kashmiri speakers adopting other languages, he advocated for prioritizing mother tongue education globally.
"Initiating education in one's mother tongue is crucial globally, allowing for explicit expression of emotions that might be hindered in non-native languages,” he said.
Emphasising on the richness of Kashmiri language and literature, Kralawari urged pride in speaking the native tongue. "Our language boasts of revered poets like Lal Ded, Maqbool Shah Kralawari, Rasul Mir, Habba Khatoon, portraying a deep cultural heritage."
Kralawari has translated notable works, including his rendition of F Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" into Kashmiri.
He is currently dedicated to exploring the origin of the language.
Kralawari called upon the Jammu and Kashmir government to take proactive measures in nurturing the growth of the language, now that Microsoft has embraced it.
