Even as situation along Line of Control in Kashmir and International border in Jammu remains calm as both the neighbouring countries strictly observe ceasefire agreement of midnight February 24-25 this year – which is a welcome step in light of maintenance of peace and subsequent impact on residents of villages near those areas who by any means desperately sought its implementation in letter and spirit. The sole aim of this mutual agreement was to stem the bids of infiltration from the other side of Line of Control or International border and till date the sanctity of this accord has been maintained. As per official record, there were 5133 ceasefire violations along LoC last year while this year almost none which was duly recognized by General Officer Commanding of Army’s 15 Corps Lieutenant General D P Pandey on Monday when he confirmed that since January this year there has been zero ceasefire violation. His statement is reassuring that peace ushers on borders but the need of the hour is that soldiers should remain alert and vigilant to thwart any attempts to infiltrate to this side as rightly asserted by the Commander that the Army would respond appropriately and any attempts would be tackled accordingly. As reiterated in the agreement about mechanism of hotlines and flag meetings, any such misadventure from across the LoC should be immediately taken at DGsMO level and the concerns about the bids should be raised which could check it to further escalate or deteriorate and there could be checks and balance from the other end too as infiltrators are pushed from that side. It is in light of this statement which said that ‘in the interest of achieving mutually beneficial and sustainable peace along the borders, the two DGsMO agreed to address each other’s core issues and concerns which have [the] propensity to disturb peace and lead to violence.’ As per the existing mechanism, there is a discussion by officials from the Military Operations directorate every Tuesday but the DGsMO speaks only when one side requests a conversation. The Government of India has rightly stated that India desires normal neighbourly relations with Pakistan and maintained that India is committed to addressing issues, if any, in a peaceful bilateral manner.
