Poverty is a state or condition in which one lacks the financial resources and essentials for a certain standard of living in other words it refers to a situation in which an individual fails to earn sufficient income to meet the basic requirements of life such as food, clothing, shelter, health facilities etc. Going ahead towards the impact of poverty so poverty leads to High infant mortality rate (Infant mortality is the death of an infant before his or her first birthday), child labor (work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development), exploitation of people (to treat someone unfairly in order to make money or get an advantage) etc. Eradication of poverty refers to those measures which are taken in order to make the basic necessities accessible to people. The international day for the eradication of poverty is celebrated every year on 17 October the resolution was adopted by the UN general assembly on 22 December 1992. The observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty can be traced back to 17 October 1987.
On that day, over a hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadero in Paris, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948, to honor the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. They proclaimed that poverty is a violation of human rights and affirmed the need to come together to ensure that these rights are respected.
These convictions are inscribed in a commemorative stone unveiled on this day. Since then, people of all backgrounds, beliefs and social origins have gathered every year on 17 October to renew their commitment and show their solidarity with the poor. This year also it will be celebrated with the theme “Dignity for all in practice”.
The importance of celebrating this day is to promote the understanding and dialogue between people living in poverty and the wider society. The ultimate goal is to eliminate poverty entirely by creating the conditions for everyone to live with dignity. This day represents an opportunity to acknowledge the efforts and struggles of people living in poverty, a chance for them to make their concerns heard and a moment to recognize that poor people are in the forefront in the fight against poverty.
“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice, like slavery and apartheid ,poverty is not natural.”
