July 31, 2023 | Bint ul Huda

What is polythene ?

Polythene is a tough light Flexible synthetic resin made by polymerization of ethylene chiefly used for plastic bags food containers and packaging. It was discovered by Hans Pachmann.

Why is polythene widely used?

The polythene bags made from it cheap and easy to carry. There are also used packing bags. Most of the people find them to dispose of after use as they are very light and can be thrown away.

Disadvantages of polythene

Polythene 's usage is not good . Because many reasons one reason is this, they are non-biodegradable. In other words , they do not decay on their own. We can't even burn them as the burning would cause immense air pollution. Second reason is this, polythene damages the ecosystem of soil by retarding its carrying capacity.
Polythene can be considered both a friend and a foe depending on how it is used and managed. As a friend, polythene is versatile and widely used in various industries, providing convenience and cost-effective packaging solutions. However, as a foe, its non-biodegradable nature poses a significant threat to the environment, contributing to pollution and harming wildlife.
To be a responsible friend, it's essential to use polythene wisely, reduce single-use plastics, and promote recycling and proper waste management practices to minimize its negative impact on the environment. It's usefulness lies in its versatility and wide range of applications. Polythene is commonly used for packaging materials, plastic bags, containers, and various other products. It is lightweight, durable, and cost-effective, making it a popular choice in many industries.
However, its harmful aspect comes from its non-biodegradable nature. Polythene does not easily decompose, leading to environmental pollution and harm to wildlife when improperly disposed of. Plastic waste, including polythene, has become a significant environmental issue, and it's essential to manage its use and disposal responsibly to minimize its negative impact on the environment.
In fact you have to make a promise not to use polythene bags and also encourage other kids in your school and neighborhood not to do so. Because polythene is very harmful for the environment. According to media reports in Srinagar, I t is calculated approximately that about two lakh polythene bags are used to everyday for purchase, storage and transport of various goods like vegetables, meat , milk, milk products, sweets , confectionery ,bakery items and fruits. That is why there are so many polythene bags outside.
The government of several countries have already banned its use .In fact ,the government of Jammu and Kashmir has also made a law (vide SRO-182,dated 18/06/2008)by which its use has been banned within the territorial limits of the UT. But ,it is the responsibility of the people also to completely avoid its use that we can save ourselves and our posterity from the harmful effects of polythene. If you going for shopping, remember take a cloth bag and stop single use of plastic bags.
