Jhelum bridges get safety fencing

October 17, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Srinagar, Oct 16: The Srinagar administration is installing protective fencing and lighting on bridges over the River Jhelum to prevent suicide attempts and accidental falls, with work underway at Budshah Bridge and other vulnerable locations.
Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Akshay Labroo on Friday inspected the ongoing works at Budshah Bridge, where protective railings and lighting facilities are being installed on both sides.
Labroo said the measures were being taken in response to suicide incidents at bridges and public demands for improved pedestrian safety.
He said similar safety upgrades had been undertaken at New Zaina Kadal, Aali Kadal, Old Zaina Kadal, Nawakadal and Safakadal bridges in Shahr-e-Khaas. Fencing work at Noor Jehan Bridge in Qamarwari is also underway and is expected to be completed soon.
Officials said the Budshah Bridge project includes structural steel posts covered with stainless steel sheets, multi-level protective railings and high-tensile steel strands to strengthen the fencing. Lighting is also being installed along the railings to improve visibility at night.
The Deputy Commissioner said the initiative aimed to enhance public safety while preserving the appearance of the bridges and the scenic character of the Jhelum riverfront.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Mir Imtiyaz Ul Aziz and senior officials from the Roads and Buildings Department, KPDCL and the district administration accompanied Labroo during the inspection.
