Jhelum bund damaged after rains

April 13, 2026 | BK News Service

Srinagar, April 12: Incessant rains have caused visible damage to the embankment along the Jhelum River near the General Post Office bund in Srinagar, with cracks appearing on the riverbank and portions of the structure collapsing into the water, locals said.

The damage, reported after continuous rainfall in the valley, includes cracks along the embankment surface, displacement of concrete sections, and damage to public benches installed along the bund. Parts of the concrete wall and adjoining ground have reportedly caved in, with debris falling into the river.
The incident has raised concerns among people and passersby, particularly given the location’s proximity to a frequently used public stretch. Locals said the cracks appear to be widening in some sections, indicating possible structural weakening of the embankment.
Locals said that despite the damage being noticeable, no immediate repair or barricading work had been initiated at the site so for. “The cracks are clearly visible, and part of the bank has already fallen, but no action has been taken so far,” a local resident told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.
The affected stretch lies along the Jhelum bund near the General Post Office, an area that typically sees pedestrian movement and is considered part of the city’s riverfront zone.
Continuous rainfall can weaken soil stability along riverbanks, particularly in areas with concrete embankments where water seepage and erosion may compromise structural integrity.
