J&K ranks 2nd in PM Surya Ghar scheme

June 05, 2026 | BK News Service

Srinagar, June 4: Jammu and Kashmir has secured the second position nationally in the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana for May 2026, earning recognition from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy for its performance in rooftop solar applications, installations and inspections.

The award was received in New Delhi by Mahmood Ahmad Shah on behalf of the Union Territory during an event marking two years of the flagship solar programme.
Since the scheme’s rollout in J&K in July 2024, rooftop solar adoption has grown steadily. As of now, 98,601 applications have been registered on the national portal, including 69,184 under Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited and 29,402 under Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited.
A total of 33,987 rooftop solar systems have been commissioned across the Union Territory, adding 121.61 MW of renewable energy capacity. Of these, 21,255 installations are in Kashmir and 12,730 in Jammu.
The scheme has also facilitated the direct transfer of ₹258.18 crore in central financial assistance to beneficiaries, along with an additional ₹10 crore in UT subsidy support.
Affordable financing has played a key role in the programme’s success. More than 45,000 loan applications have been received, with over 27,000 already sanctioned or disbursed, primarily through J&K Bank. More than 80 percent of installations in the UT have been financed through low-interest loans.
Vendor participation has also expanded significantly, with over 300 empanelled vendors operating in J&K, contributing to competitive pricing, quality service delivery and employment generation in the renewable energy sector.
During May 2026 alone, the UT recorded 4,559 new applications, 2,579 rooftop solar installations and 2,688 inspections. Compared to May 2025, rooftop solar installations increased by 77 percent, reflecting growing public confidence in clean energy solutions.
The Power Development Department attributed the achievement to coordinated efforts by the department, DISCOMs, district administrations, empanelled vendors and consumers, and reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sustainable and affordable energy across Jammu and Kashmir.
