The 7th Annual General Body Meeting of the Jammu and Kashmir Association of Rowing and Sculling (JKRS) took place at the Radisson Collection in Srinagar, drawing athletes, dignitaries, and sports officials in a show of unity and purpose. The event was both a celebration of achievements and a call for stronger support to make water sports a national and international success story for Jammu and Kashmir.
Guest of Honour Shri B. S. Ahluwalia praised the natural potential of the region, saying, “Kashmir is a paradise for water sports. With the right backing, it can become a global hub.” He emphasized the importance of immediate government support to realize this vision.
Dr. Burhan Bazzaz, President of JKRS, congratulated Ms. Bilquis Mir on becoming the first Indian jury member on the Olympic panel. “This is a national achievement, but it must be matched with support and recognition,” he said, urging collaboration with the government to elevate the sport.
Ms. Bilquis Mir, an international medalist, highlighted the lack of resources and the need for structured investment. “We are not asking for favours, just a fair chance. With boats, events, and training, we can build a legacy,” she said.
Mr. Shafqat Watali, President of JK Canoeing and Kayaking Association (JKCKA), echoed the call for support. “We have passion and talent. What we need is infrastructure and funding,” he stated. Vice President Imran Ahmad added, “With proper investment, golden moments await our athletes.”
Mr. Latief Ahmad, CEO of Colour Curve, called for partnerships with businesses and government, while Dr. Shahid Ali Khan from Kashmir University stressed the role of water sports in boosting adventure tourism.
A unanimous resolution was passed to begin district-level competitions, grassroots training, and outreach in schools and colleges. The association reaffirmed its commitment to developing the sport while requesting the government to share the responsibility.
Young athletes, though proud of their achievements, expressed frustration. “Other states offer us more support. Why is our own home quiet?” they asked, appealing to Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha and Jenab Omar Abdullah for attention and backing.
The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Bazzaz, who acknowledged athletes, media, and especially Jinab Mushtaq Ahmad Chaya for his generosity in supporting the event.
