Journalists urge review of Social Media restrictions

March 06, 2026 | BK News Service

Srinagar, March 5: The journalist fraternity in Jammu and Kashmir has appealed to authorities to reconsider the blocking of several social media accounts belonging to media organizations and individuals, warning that restricting credible news platforms could unintentionally contribute to the spread of misinformation.

Senior journalists have urged the government to distinguish between “noise” and “news,” emphasizing that professional media outlets play a crucial role in providing verified information, particularly during sensitive situations.
The appeal comes amid recent protests in parts of the region following reports about the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, after which access to dozens of social media accounts was reportedly withheld in India.
Among the accounts said to be affected are those associated with several prominent Kashmir-based media organizations, including Greater Kashmir, Rising Kashmir, Brighter Kashmir, and Kashmir Life, along with a number of individual social media handles.
Journalists said that credible news outlets serve as a vital counter to rumours by presenting verified information from the ground. Blocking such platforms, they warned, could create an information vacuum that may be filled by unverified or misleading sources.
“If credible news platforms are blocked, misinformation can spread rapidly because people begin relying on unreliable sources,” a senior journalist told Kashmir News Trust.
Members of the media fraternity also highlighted the constructive role played by professional media houses in the region. They said responsible journalism has consistently contributed to reporting developments accurately, highlighting issues of public interest, and supporting peace-building efforts.
They further noted that isolated incidents should not be used as a basis to judge the overall role of credible media organizations, whose broader contribution to responsible and ethical journalism remains significant.
Meanwhile, police have repeatedly appealed to media organizations and social media users to exercise responsibility and avoid spreading misinformation, especially during sensitive developments.
Journalists have urged the authorities to review the restrictions and restore access to the social media accounts of credible media houses, stressing that verified journalism remains essential for transparency, public awareness, and maintaining trust between institutions and society.
