The lasting significance of an event is determined by its embodiment of timeless ideals such as justice, peace, equality, liberty, and fraternity. These fundamental values are quintessential in every era and are pursued through the lens of historical references. The core principles that were exemplified in the events of Karbala, where Hazrat Imam Hussain and his companions sacrificed their lives, remain relevant to humanity. The spirit of Karbala transcends time and place, as these values continue to be trampled upon by those in power - whether politically economically or socially. Even today, Karbala is re-enacted whenever these ideals are threatened. Just as the original battle took place on an open field, the revival of these values requires stepping out of one's comfort zone and bravely standing up for them on the battlefield.
Karbala holds immense significance also because it’s relevance increases in the contemporary war torn world where oppressors rule the world and oppressed are silenced and pushed to the fringes of history. In today’s world, Palestine has doubled the importance of Karbala event. It offered it the context of combat between right and wrong, oppressor and oppressed, suppression and voice, submission and defiance.
In Kashmir during Moharram processions, mourners waved flags of Palestine and Lebanon to demonstrate their solidarity for Palestine and Lebanon. This year in Kashmir, mourners politicised this ritual and revived it’s spirit of resistance. It got back the defying characteristic. It travelled from ritual to resistance and is now considered a great threat to Zionist ideology who perpetrate unforgettable brutality on Palestinians.
One of the main provocative of Karbala was political silence. Imam Hussein moved to Karbala to disrupt this political reticence and inspire the voice of people against despotism and corruption. Yazid had imposed his authority over people through intelligence and institutions presenting things as normal. People were befooled to believe everything is normal. Imam Hussein exposed this fake normalcy and awakened people about the happenings around them. The distorted version of Islam was challenged and it’s right version was revived and clarified to people. Shaheed Muthahari writes that Islam was reduced to verbal faith only and it’s practical part was neglected. People then would drink wine and commit fornication but they would also lead congregational prayers and were considered true Muslims. The verbal part of faith was considered enough attestation for Islam. Imam Hussein reconciled the two and showed Islam in its practice by standing against the political system of Yazid. Only Yazid was not corrupt, the so called Islamic political system that he manufactured through political authority distorting the true tenets of Islam and alienating Islamic thought from action was also against the true definition of Islam. Imam Hussein in Karbala exposed both organic intellectuals who set up an industry and concocted Islamic thoughts and ideas that suited the authority of Yazid and the organic institutions as well that were used to enforce these thoughts and ideas and certify them as original thoughts and ideas. Shaheed Muthahari writes that the biggest industry of our times is the industry that concocts truths while signifying the relevance of Karbala and imam Hussein for our contemporary times. Imam Hussein distinguish the two right and wrong so clearly that no one who understands Karbala truly will be manipulated in any era or age.
Imam Hussein made resistance a common sense that was crime during the regime of Yazid. Now Muslims carry this resistance legacy and challenge authoritanism wherever it is observed. The fear of death does not hinder this stand and one fearlessly fights the despots challenging their power and threaten them to dethrone. Everyone is conscious now regarding the happenings of the world and knows well the position to take. Imam Hussain expanded the gap between right and wrong and separated them in such a way that never can these two be blended. He left us only with these two positions- to support right or wrong. The neutral stand – silence and conformism were eliminated. Silence is considered an approval and voice a defiance.
