Kashmir University, the Torchbearer

November 10, 2021 |
Kashmir University is the premier educational institution in the Valley which has served everyone and each household since its establishment in 1948 as the University of Jammu and Kashmir and later from 1969 onwards when it was bifurcated into two universities in Srinagar and Jammu. Despite the establishment of Islamic University, Awantipora, Central University Kashmir or Cluster University, Srinagar, KU continues to rule hearts of the student community as it has expanded leaps and bounds over the years. It provides a productive learning environment to thousands of students in higher education as its commitment has yielded excellent results. It has been re-accredited as Grade A University by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India. A recognition and reflection of the high standard of quality education which attracted the country's defence forces towards it as the Army signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with KU that will allow soldiers serving in the valley to study various courses through distance learning. The MoU was signed between GoC 15 Corps Lt Gen D P Pandey and University of Kashmir vice -chancellor Prof Talat Ahmed at KU’s Gandhi Bhavan. An important milestone in the history of any educational institution of Jammu and Kashmir. The Directorate of Distance Education would be the nodal department which would enroll for 18 courses. Even the head of Chinar Corps admitted that KU with its rich heritage, culture and academia will provide a one of the kind opportunity for army personnel and civil defence employees to pursue higher educational qualifications, domain specialization and subject matter expertise. It has been the blood and sweat of its employees which has yielded results in terms of it reaching the pinnacle. KU campus has witnessed brutal killings during three decades of strife as legendary educationist and former V-C Mushirul Haq, his personal secretary Abdul Gani Zargar were shot dead by terrorists on April 10, 1990 in Srinagar outskirts after being kidnapped from KU. Also, the Dean and HOD Law Faculty Prof Abdul Ahad Wani, who is credited to have established the Law Department in KU, was killed in the campus by terrorists on December 31 (Friday), 1993. Notwithstanding these killings or abductions, KU has been and continues to remain the knowledge hub of the valley where research and degrees are obtained on merit as the teaching faculty strives for excellence. However, the positive aspects apart, there has to be no complacency in the approach of policy makers in KU. There has to be knowledge based productive methodology wherein PHDs are granted to the thesis of extensive research which should help the society and policy makers to implement programmes at the ground level. During the crisis situation, it should not shut in toto but students should benefit from the knowledge of the faculty and their scholarly methods should be utilized by way of community teaching. It also has a role in taking measures to see that graduate or postgraduate courses are completed in three –four years and not prolonged which takes a toll on students' progression in career as their compatriots outside complete the degrees on time while Kashmiri students remain behind them.
