Kashur: The Soul of Kashmir

To prevent this unique language from going extinct, and to preserve our identity, this language needs to be revived

June 12, 2022 | Aliya Zahoor Mir

I have no compelling story to share but no words either to describe my beautiful Kashur Bol . My mother tongue - Kashur has an important role in shaping our emotions and overall life . Kashmiri (Koshur) is key to my culture , identity and my beliefs. For me, undoubtedly, it’s the sweetest language on the planet.

Ahha ! When we say Kashmiri or Kashur , it is a magnificent tongue-twister of a language. And it’s such a reflection of the core values of my people — so sharp, funny and specific — that I end up reaching for it in situations that can’t be described in English. The beautiful Kashur language at home has no other sani and we at home love it when our moma sprout from mouth like she call a toddler a “khin-metz,” a snot-smeared, wild-eyed child. "Gobra paer sa" ( Study my child ) . The Kashur we speak at home soothes soul and gives us a sort of identity being kashmiri. Very unfortunate to mention here that this beautiful language lacks preservity. Different researches shows it that among the registered languages of Asia, Koshur (Kashmiri) is among the last languages in terms of literature. The other unfortunate fact is also that the kashmiri written literature which should have been available in thousands in Libraries , but the availability of Koshur books in the libraries could be counted on finger tips. Not only this, the other hefty unfortunate cycle is those who call themselves, the tycoons of Koshur, use Urdu and English language during conversations and their successors don’t even understand their mother tongue (Koshur). Taking all these points under consideration, a question arises: Why?

Kashur the Pride Bol

Kashur Bol is spoken by more than 7 million people in the Kashmir region including Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
The worrisome situation is that English and Urdu has become a language of stardom in Kashmir and our this mother tongue is losing its sheen and is on decline. In Kashmir although attempts are being made to revive this language, little inclination is seen in students to pursue the Kashmiri language in higher studies.
As John Ciardi ,a poet, translator, critic and etymologist said, “Tell me how much a nation knows about its language, and I will tell you how much that nation knows about its own identity”. To prevent this unique language from going extinct, and to preserve our identity, this language needs to be revived.
