Keran Mela 2026 begins along LoC

Keran, Sep 11: The grand Keran Mela 2026 officially commenced in the pristine border village of Keran, located right along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district. Jointly organized by the Indian Army and the District Administration Kupwara, the three-week-long mega-festival is scheduled to run from 06 to 27 September 2026.

The landmark event aims to showcase the natural grandeur, rich cultural heritage and unique border identity of the Keran Valley, while simultaneously driving socio-economic development through border tourism and homestay initiatives.
Speaking at the inauguration, civil and military officials highlighted that the festival stands as a symbol of the enduring synergy between the armed forces, local administration, and the citizens of Jammu & Kashmir. The unique setting of Keran, famous for its majestic views along the Kishanganga River and the distinct presence of opposing national flags on either side of the border, provides an unforgettable experience for visiting tourists.
Key Highlights of Keran Mela 2026 includes a lineup of competitive sporting events featuring cricket tournament, volleyball tournament, athletics competitions, tug-of-war contests and 'Run for Fun' to engage local youth.
Cultural Extravaganza will include live instrumental music, traditional dances and artistic performances showcasing the rich, historic heritage of the Kashmir Valley. In addition, the District Administration and the Indian Army have set up dedicated counters for medical screenings, career counseling, tourism guidance, and drug de-addiction awareness. Stalls displaying local handicrafts, organic agricultural produce and promotional setups encouraging visitors to experience authentic local hospitality through registered homestays are also associated with the event. The Mela is expected to further strengthen this bond while inspiring the younger generation to dream bigger, stay away from drugs and contribute positively to society.
