Keran, Sep 27:There are some sights that need no explanation. Today, in the picturesque frontier village of Keran, one such sight unfolded, a celebration of life, culture and hope, against the dramatic backdrop of the Line of Control.

For anyone watching from across the LoC, Keran Mela 2026 would have been an unusual and perhaps unforgettable sight. They would have seen children laughing and competing on the sports field. They would have seen families enjoying music and traditional performances. They would have seen young people displaying their talent, local entrepreneurs showcasing their products and visitors discovering the extraordinary beauty of Keran.

The same frontier that once symbolised distance was transformed into a window through which the story of a changing Kashmir could be seen.
The Month long Mela brought together sport, culture, tourism, community engagement, healthcare, career counselling and awareness initiatives. Yet its greatest achievement may not be found in any individual event. It lies in the confidence with which the people of Keran participated in it.
Peace is most meaningful when it is visible in the lives of people.
It is visible when children can play without apprehension.
It is visible when tourists arrive to admire the landscape.
It is visible when homestays open their doors to visitors.
It is visible when local products find new markets.
It is visible when young people begin to see opportunity where earlier generations saw uncertainty.
That is the larger story of Keran. The Mela also carried an important message of cleanliness and environmental responsibility through the Green Keran, Clean Keran campaign.
