Jammu, June 11:: Following the completion of boring in the Zojila Tunnel on June 9, several key highway and tunnel projects in Jammu and Kashmir are nearing completion, which are expected to significantly improve road connectivity and reduce travel time.
One of the major projects is the Digdol–Khooni Nallah twin-tube tunnel on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH44). The 3.20-km tunnel, being built at a cost of around Rs 1,401.87 crore, has achieved about 89.5% physical progress. Authorities are aiming to open it before the Amarnath Yatra beginning July 3, although the revised completion timeline is August 2026.
Another major project on NH44 is the 4.38-km Marog–Digdol tunnel, which is still under construction and has achieved about 28% progress. It is now expected to be completed by June 2027.
Work is also progressing on a 6.02-km viaduct package beyond Ramsoo towards Banihal, costing Rs 614.50 crore. The project, originally targeted for earlier completion, is now likely to be finished by March 2027.
Meanwhile, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is close to completing the Sungal tunnel on the Jammu–Poonch highway, which is expected to be opened by the end of this month. Once operational, it is expected to ease travel and reduce journey time on the route.
